Conjugate Vaccines Reduce Incidence of Antibiotic-Nonsusceptible IPD

Incidence was markedly lower in 2007–2008 than in 1998–1999, before introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

The overall incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) fell dramatically in the U.S. after introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in 2000. A 13-valent preparation introduced in 2010 should reduce this rate further. For individuals who do contract IPD, infection with an antibiotic-nonsusceptible pneumococcal strain complicates treatment. Investigators recently conducted a population-based survey to determine the effect of conjugate vaccines in preventing infection with such strains.

Clinical and microbiological data were examined for cases detected by the Active Bacterial Core surveillance system from 1998 through 2008. The parenteral penicillin susceptibility breakpoints adopted in 2008 were used.
