Pyronaridine–Artesunate Efficacious for Uncomplicated Falciparum Malaria

In a phase III study conducted in seven Asian and African countries, this combination was noninferior to mefloquine-artesunate.

Phase II and III clinical trials have shown pyronaridine–artesunate (PA) to be highly efficacious for treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria (JW Infect Dis May 5 2010). Now, in a phase III, open-label, noninferiority trial, researchers have tested PA against mefloquine plus artesunate (MA). The study was conducted in seven countries in Africa and Asia and was partially supported by the manufacturer of PA.

Individuals aged 3 to 60 years with acute, uncomplicated falciparum malaria were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive a 3-day, in-hospital, oral treatment (weight-based dose) with PA or MA.
