Postprocedural endophthalmitis occurs in about 0.04% of patients who receive intravitreal injections or pars plana vitrectomies; such infections are usually bacterial. In March 2012, the California Department of Public Health learned of nine cases of fungal endophthalmitis in patients treated at a single ambulatory surgical center. All these cases involved use of Brilliant Blue-G dye, formulated at Franck's Compounding Lab, Ocala, Florida. As of April 30, 2012, 24 additional cases had been identified (total, 33 confirmed and probable cases in 7 states); 13 of these cases were associated with use of triamcinolone-containing products compounded at the same Florida laboratory.
