Several studies have demonstrated a shift in the profile of infective endocarditis (IE) in the developed world, with an increase in the proportion of cases caused by staphylococci. However, many of those studies were from referral-based centers and thus may not reflect overall trends.
Now, investigators have updated two population-based observational studies that they conducted during the 1990s. Physicians and microbiologists in seven administrative districts in France were asked to notify the study coordinating center of any cases of suspected IE occurring in adults during the 2008 calendar year. Case reports were collected and validated using the Duke criteria for IE.
