Salmonellosis can be acquired in various ways, including contact with infected animals. When a Salmonella strain with a previously unidentified pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern was isolated from three Colorado patients in 2005, researchers initiated a multistate investigation.
Using PulseNet — the national molecular subtyping network for foodborne disease surveillance in the U.S. — the researchers identified 316 patients in 43 states who had infections caused by the outbreak strain of Salmonella enterica serotype Montevideo between 2004 and 2011. The patients had a median age of 4 years. All isolates were multidrug susceptible, and no deaths were reported.
