Infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBLE) are becoming more common globally. Investigators at a transplant center in France recently conducted an observational study to assess the incidence of and risk factors for such infections after liver transplantation (LT).
During the 10-year study period (January 2001 through April 2010), 710 LT patients were screened preoperatively for fecal ESBLE using rectal swab specimens obtained on the day of surgery. Patients routinely received intraoperative cefoxitin prophylaxis.
Pretransplant fecal ESBLE carriage was found in 29 of the 710 patients (4.1%), with the proportion of carriers increasing from 0% in 2001–2003 to 10.6% in 2009–2010. Overall, 39 patients (…
