Globally, 18,500 deaths from laboratory-confirmed H1N1 influenza were reported between April 2009 and August 2010. Believing that this number is much too low, researchers used a new approach to estimate the total number of H1N1 influenza–related deaths worldwide during the first 12 months of virus circulation in each country.
Using data from high-, middle-, and low-income countries, they estimated the 12-month cumulative symptomatic attack rate; they then multiplied the rate by the estimated symptomatic case fatality ratio from select high-income countries.
