Research has shown that intestinal microbiota composition varies greatly among healthy individuals (JW Infect Dis Apr 27 2011), as well as in association with metabolic and inflammatory conditions. The limited data on the intestinal microbiota of older individuals have shown marked differences with younger populations. To explore this variability further, researchers in the U.K. analyzed the fecal microbiota of 178 individuals aged ≥65 in relation to diet, residence setting, and health parameters. Individuals with antibiotic therapy during the previous 30 days or a history of alcohol abuse were excluded.
