The prevalence of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB; i.e., resistant to at least isoniazid, rifampin, and ≥1 drug within each of the 2 most important groups of second-line anti-TB agents) is increasing as more patients with multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB; resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampin) are treated with second-line drugs. Of the 27 high MDR-TB burden countries, only 2 routinely test for susceptibility to second-line anti-TB agents.
