Pediatric quality-improvement studies have demonstrated reductions in central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs), but until now, no such investigations have involved an entire inpatient oncology cohort. In a recent single-center, prospective, interventional study conducted in an 18-bed pediatric oncology unit, researchers included both stem cell transplant recipients and children undergoing treatment of malignancies. In addition, the researchers focused only on optimizing catheter-maintenance procedures because of previous evidence suggesting that improvement in these procedures is significantly associated with decreased pediatric CLABSI rates.
