Data from in vitro susceptibility tests and retrospective analyses suggest that linezolid may offer benefit to patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). Now, investigators have conducted a prospective, phase IIa trial of this agent in adults with chronic XDR-TB who had not responded to any available antibiotic regimen during the preceding 6 months.
Patients were enrolled at two medical centers in South Korea and were randomized to receive 600 mg of linezolid daily (in addition to their existing regimens) starting immediately or 2 months later.
