In 2006, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine received FDA approval for prevention of HPV-related cancers in women, and routine vaccination of all U.S. girls aged 11 to 12 years was recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The vaccine is most effective if given before the onset of sexual activity.
Uptake of the vaccine has been lower than expected, in part due to concern that vaccination against a sexually transmitted infection (STI) could lead to increased promiscuity among teenage girls who believe they are protected against all STIs.
