The first pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar 7; Pfizer) contained the antigens of seven serotypes. Approved by the FDA in 2000, it has since been superseded by the 13-antigen Prevnar 13. PHiD-CV10 — a 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in which the 10 polysaccharides are conjugated to Haemophilus influenzae protein D, tetanus toxoid, and diphtheria toxoid as the carrier proteins — was licensed in the European Union in March 2009 (Synflorix; GlaxoSmithKline) and is available in many countries.
