The last emergence of a novel coronavirus resulted in an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome that began in Asia and rapidly spread to North America. Now, the WHO has received reports of 14 confirmed cases of a severe respiratory disease in which another novel coronavirus has been isolated. Illness onsets were between April 2012 and February 2013, and 8 of the patients have died. The epicenter of this outbreak appears to be the Arabian Peninsula. Genetic sequence analysis has shown the underlying pathogen to be different from any known coronavirus.
