Hyperinsulinemia has been proposed as a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). However, insulin resistance and elevated insulin levels are commonly associated with hypertriglyceridemia and low levels of high-density lipoprotein. Investigators from Montreal sought to determine whether the association of elevated insulin levels with CHD is independent of other known risk factors.
In 1985, as part of the Quebec Cardiovascular Study, blood samples and risk factor information were obtained in 2103 men who did not have ischemic heart disease. After excluding diabetics, 91 patients developed an ischemic event by 1990; these were matched with 105 controls for age, body-mass index, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption.
