Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials of abciximab in ST-segment–elevation MI (STEMI). Eight trials (involving 3949 patients) tested abciximab as an adjunctive medication during primary angioplasty; three (involving 23,166 patients) assessed its use with half-dose fibrinolytic therapy.
In the angioplasty trials, abciximab recipients had significantly lower mortality rates than control subjects had at 30 days (2.4% vs. 3.4%) and at 6 to 12 months (4.4% vs. 6.2%). These mortality benefits were not found in the fibrinolysis trials or when data from the angioplasty and fibrinolysis trials were combined. However, the combined data on 30-day reinfarction did show a significant benefit with abciximab (2.1% vs. 3.3%).
