Some studies have shown an association between moderate alcohol consumption and reduced risks for MI and MI-related mortality. In this multicenter, prospective cohort study of 1919 hospitalized MI patients, researchers examined the relationship between binge drinking and subsequent mortality. From patient interviews, average weekly alcohol intake was categorized as none, light (<7 drinks), or heavy (≥7 drinks).
Binge drinking, defined as ≥3 drinks within 1 to 2 hours, was reported by 13% of patients (median episodes, 1 per week); characteristics associated with this group were younger age, male sex, divorced or separated marital status, smoking, and heavier weekly alcohol consumption.
