After a transient ischemic attack (TIA), some patients are at high risk for early stroke, but identifying them can be challenging. Now, two research groups who each had developed a tool for predicting short-term stroke risk after TIA have collaborated to develop a unified, validated scoring system.
The researchers demonstrated that, in four independent TIA cohorts totaling 2893 patients, the California score (JAMA 2000; 284:2901) and the ABCD score (Journal Watch Cardiology Aug 5 2005) performed similarly in predicting strokes at 2 days, 7 days, and 90 days. A unified scoring system, derived using the two cohorts (1916 total patients) from whom the original tools had been derived, was then validated in all 4809 patients.
