Prevalence and Prognosis of Heart Failure by ACC/AHA Stage

Results of a community-based population study validate the ACC/AHA staging model and support a broadening of HF prevention strategies.

The staging system in current ACC/AHA heart failure guidelines acknowledges the importance of risk factors and of underlying structural abnormalities in the development of HF, and recognizes the progressive and chronic nature of the syndrome (Journal Watch Cardiology Oct 14 2005). To assess the prevalence and prognostic implications of the ACC/AHA HF stages, investigators studied a population-based cohort of 2029 individuals in Minnesota, who were 45 years or older on January 1, 1997.
