Populations that consume high amounts of soy tend to have low risks for cardiovascular disease. Investigators in the U.S. conducted a randomized, controlled, crossover trial of the effects of consuming roasted soy nuts for 8 weeks on blood pressure and lipid levels in postmenopausal women. The daily serving (one-half cup) of soy nuts contained 240 calories and 8 grams of fat (6 g of polyunsaturated fat and 2 g of monounsaturated fat).
Soy nut supplementation was associated with significantly reduced blood pressure levels in all of the 12 hypertensive women (mean decrease in systolic blood pressure, 9.9%) and in 40 of the 48 normotensive women (mean decrease, 5.2%).
