In the manufacturer-funded TNT (Treating to New Targets) study (Journal Watch Cardiology Apr 22 2005), aggressive lipid-lowering treatment with 80 mg of atorvastatin provided a significant clinical benefit to patients with stable coronary artery disease, compared with a dose of 10 mg of atorvastatin. In a prespecified secondary analysis, outcomes data on the participants who were 65 years or older at baseline (38% of the total cohort) were studied. Of these 3809 older patients, 1872 received 10 mg and 1937 received 80 mg of atorvastatin.
