Mortality data have documented the existence of a “Stroke Belt” with high mortality rates in the southeastern region of the U.S. Using data from the Physicians’ Health Study, investigators assessed risks for major cardiovascular disease (nonfatal stroke, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or death from CVD) and specific CVD events associated with residence in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and West.
The 17,927 apparently healthy male participants (age range at baseline, 40–84; 93% white) were followed for a mean of 20.4 years.
