Previously reported results from the Fifth Organization to Assess Strategies in Acute Ischemic Syndromes (OASIS-5) trial suggested that major bleeding events in acute coronary syndromes are less frequent in patients treated with fondaparinux than in those treated with enoxaparin (Journal Watch Cardiology Apr 6 2006). How might renal dysfunction, which increases the rate of major bleeding events in ACS, affect bleeding risks associated with these agents? In a subgroup analysis, OASIS-5 investigators studied data from 19,979 patients with non–ST-segment-elevation MI for whom baseline creatinine measures were available, stratified by quartiles of glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
