Findings from recent epidemiologic and observational studies have suggested that children who consume cod liver oil — rich in the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid — are less likely to have diabetes than children who do not. Investigators for the Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young (DAISY) explored the association of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids with the development of pancreatic islet cell autoimmunity in children at risk for type I diabetes, including first-degree relatives of individuals with type I diabetes and children with mutations in the human leukocyte antigen region (a genetic risk factor). Reported omega-3 fatty acid dietary intake was obtained for all participants.
