Despite a growing body of strong evidence supporting its benefit, in many places, the proportion of patients receiving adequate prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism (VTE) has changed little over time. In this multinational, one-day, cross-sectional survey sponsored by a manufacturer of antithrombotic drugs, investigators assessed VTE risk and the proper use of prophylaxis according to the 2004-updated guidelines of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) in patients hospitalized for acute surgical or medical conditions. Trained data abstractors (including physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff) reviewed hospital charts recorded on standard case-report forms from 358 hospitals in 32 countries.
