Many physicians choose eptifibatide when selecting a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor for primary percutaneous coronary intervention, even though more randomized trial data are available to support abciximab in this setting. In this observational study, investigators used a large Michigan registry to compare the outcomes achieved with these two agents in 3541 patients undergoing primary PCI for ST-segment-elevation MI.
The 729 abciximab recipients were more likely to be on dialysis and have angiographically evident thrombus, and less likely to receive preprocedural clopidogrel, than were the 2812 eptifibatide recipients.
