In Stent Recipients Taking Clopidogrel, High Platelet Reactivity Predicts Ischemic Events

In a prospective observational study, results of a point-of-care platelet-function assay correlated well with thrombotic risk after DES implantation.

Individuals vary considerably in their inhibitory responses to clopidogrel, and impaired clopidogrel response is associated with ischemic events after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. Light transmittance aggregometry (LTA) and vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) phosphorylation are costly, labor-intensive in vitro tests of platelet reactivity. In an industry-supported study, investigators assessed whether platelet reactivity measured with VerifyNow P2Y12 — a rapid, point-of-care, cartridge-based assay that correlates well with ADP-induced platelet aggregation by LTA — predicts adverse outcomes in DES recipients.
