The potential effects of statins on cancer incidence and progression remain controversial. In an observational analysis, investigators studied data on 54,210 patients in Quebec who were discharged from the hospital after acute MI from 1998 to 2004. Four specific statins — atorvastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin, and fluvastatin — were studied because of their lipophilic properties, posited as essential for antitumorigenic effects. High-dose statin use was defined as a filled statin prescription at the statin-specific target dose or a higher dose within 3 days after hospital discharge. Low-dose statin use was defined as a filled statin prescription below the statin-specific target dose within 3 days after hospital discharge.
