Some current guidelines recommend the use of aspirin for prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes. However, this recommendation is controversial because data specific to this population are sparse. To determine the benefit of antiplatelet therapy in diabetic patients, investigators for the Japanese Primary Prevention of Atherosclerosis with Aspirin for Diabetes (JPAD) study randomly assigned more than 2500 patients with type 2 diabetes and no history of atherosclerotic disease to receive either daily low-dose aspirin (81 mg or 100 mg) or no aspirin unless specifically indicated.
