The glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor abciximab has demonstrated beneficial effects, both in patients with ST-segment-elevation MI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention without clopidogrel pretreatment and in high-risk patients with acute coronary syndromes undergoing elective PCI with clopidogrel pretreatment. In this randomized, double-blind trial, 800 STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI <24 hours after symptom onset were treated with 600 mg of clopidogrel (median, 74 minutes before PCI) and then received abciximab or placebo before catheterization.
