High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Supported with the Impella 2.5 Device

Data from a European registry are encouraging, but more research is needed on patient selection and for comparison with other LV assist methods and devices.

The Impella 2.5 is a relatively new percutaneous LV assist device that is increasingly being utilized in high-risk elective percutaneous coronary interventions to avoid periprocedural hemodynamic compromise. The device is a 12-French arterial rotary support pump that is inserted across the aortic valve from the femoral artery and can supply flow rates of 2 to 2.5 L/minute for up to 5 days.

This manufacturer-supported, European, multicenter registry included 144 patients at high risk for complications who received circulatory support with the Impella 2.5 during PCI.
