Although the cardiovascular benefits of regular exercise are incontrovertible, whether discrete episodes of sexual or other physical activity can trigger acute cardiac events is not well studied. To assess the association of episodic physical or sexual activity with risk for myocardial infarction (MI) or sudden cardiac death (SCD), investigators performed a meta-analysis of case-crossover studies.
Of the 14 studies included, 10 focused on physical activity, 3 on sexual activity, and 1 on both types of activity. Episodic physical activity was associated with a nearly 3.5-fold increase in risk for MI and a nearly 5.0-fold increase in risk for SCD.
