In Beijing, airborne levels of fine particulate matter are nearly 8 times higher than the U.S. ambient air-quality standard and 10 times higher than WHO guideline recommendations. Major concerns about air pollution were raised during the selection of Beijing to host the 2008 Olympics. To ensure acceptable air quality during the games, the Chinese government instituted temporary, aggressive measures to reduce pollutant emissions, including banning certain vehicles and trucks entirely, keeping the majority of government vehicles off the road, and restricting other vehicular travel through Beijing to alternating days.
