The marked expansion of screening options has made the assessment of cardiovascular risk challenging for patients and their physicians. Which tests are essential, and which are superfluous? Many clinicians currently include measurement of carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT) in their screening practices. However, study evidence regarding the utility of this test is mixed. Seeking to amalgamate the totality of evidence, investigators conducted a meta-analysis to determine whether common cIMT adds incremental value to the Framingham Risk Score.
