Evidence is mounting that patients with diabetes and multivessel disease fare better after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) than after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, methodological limitations of the relevant studies and the need for long-term follow-up in an era of rapidly evolving stent technology have fed lingering doubts. To address these issues, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute sponsored a trial involving 1900 patients (mean age, 63; approximately 70% men) with diabetes and more than 70% stenosis in two or more major coronary arteries.
