Monotherapy with ganciclovir or foscarnet is 80% to 100% effective in treating cytomegalovirus (CMV). A new study suggests that when monotherapy fails, concurrent use of both drugs is an effective treatment for CMV in AIDS patients.
Researchers administered the combined therapy to ten adults with AIDS whose CMV disease (retinitis, esophagitis, colitis) had not been controlled after at least one course of monotherapy. Seven patients were initially treated with ganciclovir and three with foscarnet. All patients switched to the other drug before starting combination therapy. The most common reason for switching to combination therapy was disease progression.
