A recent review article in the Lancet concisely summarizes a number of issues and controversies with respect to photoprotection.
Although sunscreens have become the mainstay of photoprotection, specially manufactured clothing that has a high ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) can also protect the skin from UV damage. Densely woven fabrics; denim, wool and polyester materials; dark color; and treatment with broad-spectrum ultraviolet light absorbers all increase the UPF value.
Several studies have shown that sunscreens protect against actinic keratoses and SCC. However, there is no evidence that convincingly demonstrates they prevent BCC or melanoma.
Active ingredients in sunscreens vary considerably and may be inorganic or organic in nature.
