Although systemic corticosteroids might benefit childhood atopic dermatitis (AD), these agents retard growth, are associated with rebound flares of the disease, and have other metabolic effects. Ultraviolet light therapy is often effective, but it is difficult to deliver, and frequent appointments might impair school attendance. The use of alternative immunosuppressive agents has been suggested, including cyclosporine and azathioprine. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) has been used to good effect in adults with chronic AD.
