Photodynamic therapy has been extensively studied for the treatment of various skin cancers, but randomized comparison studies have been lacking. In this manufacturer-sponsored, prospective, multicenter, randomized study from Europe, 97 patients with 105 nonpigmented nodular basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) were treated with two to four courses of methylaminolevulinate (MAL) photodynamic therapy (PDT) or with excision using 5-mm margins. A 3-hour incubation period and red light were used for the MAL-PDT treatments, with 1 week between treatment sessions.
