Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are apparently benign mesenchymal tumors that can easily be misdiagnosed as malignant melanoma. These authors performed a retrospective analysis and describe the clinicopathologic spectrum of 10 primary cutaneous PEComas.
Ten patients (8 female; age range, 15–82), none with tuberous sclerosis, presented with painless, slowly growing dermal nodules or plaques. Eight tumors were located on the legs and two on the back. Most tumors involved the dermis, with extension to the subcutis. The median size was 1.5 cm.
