Superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAF) is a poorly recognized soft-tissue tumor located primarily on the feet and hands, usually near the nail. It appears to originate from CD34+ fibroblasts. SAF is included in the differential diagnosis of myxoid lesions and those with a predilection for the lower extremities. The authors of two retrospective studies report insights from the largest studies of these tumors since SAF was first described in 2000.
In the first review, the authors studied clinical and histopathologic data on all SAF cases (32 patients) retrieved from the U.S. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (median age, 53 years; male-to-female ratio, 2:1).
