Previous studies have linked obesity to the development of psoriasis (JW Dermatol Aug 17 2007). Whether weight loss improves psoriasis has not been well studied.
Investigators conducted a randomized, controlled, investigator-blinded study to assess the effect of a weight loss intervention on the responsiveness to low-dose cyclosporin therapy in 61 obese patients with psoriasis. Patients were randomized to receive cyclosporin plus a low-calorie diet administered by a dietitian (intervention) or cyclosporin alone (control). The cyclosporin dose was adjusted each month to maintain a constant dosage of 2.5 mg/kg/day. PASI score improvement was measured at 24 weeks.
