Recurrent melanocytic nevus (RMN) is a diagnostic challenge, as this lesion can resemble melanoma, especially melanoma with regression. Few data are available on factors in melanocytic lesions related to the tendency to recur. In a large retrospective study, researchers examined 325 RMNs and 34 malignant melanomas with regression, focusing on the histologic findings that can lead to misdiagnosis of one for the other.
The RMNs were of varied type: Most frequent (64%) were common or ordinary nevi, predominantly of the compound type; others included dysplastic nevi (28%), congenital nevi (6%), specialized nevi (e.g., blue and spindle-cell; 1%), and three malignant melanomas.
