The authors of this review1 nicely summarize the experience, culled from the literature, of patients treated with rituximab for bullous diseases. They assess outcomes and toxicity in 71 patients with autoimmune blistering diseases (pemphigus vulgaris, 51; pemphigus foliaceus, 9; paraneoplastic pemphigus, 5; epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, 4; pemphigus vegetans, 1; and pemphigoid, 1). Rituximab was highly effective, but six deaths occurred in these patients, including four with paraneoplastic pemphigus.
