Acne is one of the most common skin disorders, but its etiopathogenesis and optimal management are not fully understood. Supported by industry, members of the international Global Alliance to Improve Outcomes in Acne reviewed new data and updated their 2003 recommendations on acne management. They extend their observations to pathogenesis and new medical and surgical treatments. The Alliance also proposes a new concept of acne as a relapsing, chronic disease (rather than a self-limiting adolescent condition) that can cause significant and permanent physical and emotional scars. They therefore recommend early and aggressive acne treatment and acknowledge the need for maintenance therapy to achieve optimal outcomes.
