Loose anagen hair syndrome (LAHS) is an uncommon cause of hair loss in children, but it is more common than is represented in the literature. LAHS is likely an autosomal dominant condition with incomplete penetrance, but sporadic cases have been reported. LAHS can cause much anxiety in parents, and it is often misdiagnosed.
Researchers undertook a 10-year, retrospective review of 347 children with hair loss seen at a tertiary care pediatric dermatology practice. Of these children, 37 (10%) had LAHS. A 36:1 female predominance was noted in LAHS patients versus a 1.3:1 ratio in non-LAHS patients. LAHS patients were much younger than the non-LAHS group (mean age at onset, 2.8 vs. 7.1 years).
