Stage I melanomas make up almost 80% of all newly diagnosed cutaneous melanomas reported to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registry. Academically oriented practices frequently submit samples for official pathology review by a multidisciplinary tumor board.
