Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic skin disease in children that is usually treated with courses of topical corticosteroid therapy. The risk for decreased bone mineral density (BMD) with chronic topical steroid use is unknown. Low BMD has been reported in 30% of adult patients with AD, although a causative role for topical steroid use was not established.
Investigators from a Dutch children's hospital conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of low BMD in children with AD.
