Bacteria may play a role in rosacea, particularly in the papulopustular variant. Rosacea responds promptly and reliably to many different antibiotics. However, no nefarious bacteria are regularly isolated from pustules.
Australian investigators incised rosacea pustules in 15 patients with papulopustular rosacea and swabbed the skin of the ipsilateral cheek and eyelid margin of these patients and from the same regions of 15 matched control subjects. A pure growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated from the pustules of nine of the rosacea patients but not from the ipsilateral cheek skin, a highly significant difference.
