'Tis that time of the year when the bars of Denmark ring with deep discussions of whether one can get drunk by standing in a tub of alcohol. Three young Danish physicians addressed this question feet-on, performing an unapproved, self-funded experiment in a hospital office. They immersed their bare feet in basins filled with 2.1 liters of vodka, measured blood ethanol levels, and compared their self-confidence, number of spontaneous hugs, and urge to speak with baseline levels. Detecting no blood ethanol and no changes in behavior, they concluded that ethanol does not cross the skin.
